MUSIC & ARTS  |  June 2011

Yula Be'eri (Yuli Yael Be'eri) is an influential songwriter, mentor of post-punk musicians, and impressario of arts events based in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Playing nearly every instrument, Yula currently leads the music and arts collective, The Hive NYC, as well as the post-punk musical group, Yula & The Extended Family, while hosting or starring in events around New York City.

"Red," by Nanuchka, starring Yula Be'eri songwriting, vox, and bass.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Yula stormed North America and Europe as songwriter and bassist for the influential cabaret punk band, World/Inferno Friendship Society. She co-wrote some of Inferno's best known songs, including "The Velocity of Love" and "Thumb Cinema."

While fellow band mates went on to play in groups like The Dresden Dolls and The Hold Steady, Yula teamed up with Roy Gurel and founded the Mediterranean post-punk band, Nanuchka. Drawing on the Inferno crowd, Nanuchka quickly harvested a New York metro cult-following with songs like "Red" and "Mediterranean" [see videos above and below]. Yula soon tried on a punkier sound playing with the Star Fucking Hipsters. Meanwhile, Roy created Electro-Morocco and drummer Shlomi Lavie moved on to join Marcy Playground and found Dolchnakov Brigade.

By 2009, Yula Be'eri began sessions with the pioneering saxophonist Stefan Zeniuk and innovative accordionist Taylor Galassi and decided to create The Extended Family, a new project that was meant to forge a more joyful kind of punk, which came to be known as romantic punk, or "ro-punk."

While band manager Kriss Marchena wrote the ro-punk manifesto, Yula attracted more and more musicians to the cause, including: Isaac Gardner (drums, theater), Kevin Taylor (Torcher Chamber, trombone, accordion), Sarah Zar (Shayfer James, The Marionette Roulette, painting, musical saw), Kate Campbell (trumpet, glockenspiel, filmmaking), Rob Meyer (trombone, horticulture), and a number of others who joined in sessions from New York to Florida.

In live shows, the group performed new songs like "Barcelona," "My Cane," and "Back Off America," [below] alongside Nanuchka classics including "Red" [above]and "One of Us."

By 2011, Yula solidified The Extended Family with Isaac Gardner, Kevin Taylor, Sarah Zar, Kate Campbell, Rob Meyer, and brought on HELO Media founder, Daniel J Gerstle on bass guitar, guitar, and keyboard. The Extended Family plays regularly at New York's Gowanus Ballroom and Rockwood Music Hall, among other punk and formal venues.

Combining forces with Stefan Zeniuk's psycho-mambo band, Gato Loco Coconino, and Taylor Galassi's steam punk group, This Way to the Egress, Extended Family shows unify the trans-punk and post-punk community and often feature flamethrowing instruments, fire-breathers, acrobats, and other performances.
